FAQ

Everything you need to know about campaigns and funds.

What is Slopstarter?

A way to fund AI usage for a person or project instead of handing over cash. Money you send turns into real, spend-capped OpenAI or Anthropic access for the creator — through an all-or-nothing campaign or a pooled fund.

What's the difference between a campaign and a fund?

A campaign is all-or-nothing: it has a goal and a deadline, and pledges are only charged if the goal is met in time. A fund pools money toward a target without one fixed owner, and can raise more than it. Once it reaches its target, developers can propose to do the work, and contributors vote on which proposal gets it.

What happens if a campaign doesn't reach its goal?

Nothing is charged. Pledges are authorized, not captured, until the deadline. If the goal isn't met, every pledge is released automatically.

How does voting work for a fund?

Anyone who's contributed can vote on a proposal. By default, the proposal backed by more money wins. If one side is backed by a much larger number of distinct people — three times as many or more — that side wins instead, so a fund can't be swung by one large contribution against broad support. A tie is rejected, and the fund reopens for proposals. A proposal doesn't name an amount: if it passes, the developer gets everything the fund holds when voting ends.

Where does my money actually go?

You never see a raw OpenAI or Anthropic dashboard. Money you send settles into the recipient's wallet, which is spent through a spend-capped OpenAI Project or Anthropic Workspace — it's not possible to spend more than what was funded.

How do I know what a campaign will use the AI credit for?

Every new campaign has to describe, before it launches, what the AI will do with the credit. It's at the top of the campaign's Story tab. After the campaign is funded, the Spending tab shows what the credit was actually used on — which keys, which models, and how much — as reported by OpenAI and Anthropic.

Can I see how the money I gave is being used?

Yes. Every campaign and fund has a Spending section showing how much was released, which spend-capped keys the creator issued from it, and how much each key has used and on which models — figures synced from OpenAI and Anthropic, not typed in by the creator. Credit from a project can only leave the creator's wallet through keys listed there.

Is my payment information safe?

Payments are processed through a standard, secure payment provider. Slopstarter never stores your raw card details.

Can I change or cancel my pledge?

Yes, until the campaign's deadline: open the campaign (it’s listed under Bookmarks) and use Change pledge or Cancel pledge. Cancelling releases the hold on your card straight away. One exception, to protect creators from last-minute drops: in the final 24 hours you can't lower or cancel a pledge if it would take a campaign that has reached its goal back below it. Pledged as a guest? Use the "Manage your pledge" link in your pledge email (it's there if you gave an email address).

Can I get a refund?

Successful campaign pledges are final once captured. Before the deadline you can cancel a pledge instead, and an unsuccessful campaign automatically releases every pledge, so you're never charged for a campaign that didn't reach its goal.

What are 18+ projects?

Campaigns and funds with sexual or erotic content — nudity, erotica, adult games and the like — marked 18+ by their creators. They're hidden by default: to see them, sign in, go to your profile and turn on 18+ projects — you'll be asked for your date of birth, and need to be 18 or older. Backing one is private, like every pledge: backers are only ever shown as a count.
